The ladies have been drawn alongside heavyweights and familiar foes in what many are already calling a “group of death.”

 A Group Packed With Danger

For Nigeria women’s national basketball team, ranked eighth in the world, D’Tigress will battle through a highly competitive pool that blends European power, Asian speed, and tactical discipline.

France, currently ranked second globally, headline the group and pose the biggest threat, while South Korea (15th) and Hungary (19th) complete a lineup that leaves little room for error.

European giants France, ranked among the world’s elite, stand out as the biggest hurdle, while Hungary’s disciplined, structured play and South Korea’s fast-paced, high-tempo approach will require tactical flexibility from the Nigerian side.

Notably, Nigeria will renew rivalries with both France and South Korea, teams that defeated them during the recent qualification tournament in Lyon.

Familiar Foes, Unfinished Business

The draw sets up immediate storylines, with Nigeria set to renew rivalries against both France and South Korea.

These teams defeated D’Tigress during the World Cup qualifying tournament in Lyon earlier this year.

  • Nigeria fell 93–86 to France
  • Lost 77–60 to South Korea
  • But secured a strong win over Colombia in between

Those results have only intensified the stakes, turning the group stage into a potential redemption arc for D’Tigress.

 Expanded Tournament, Bigger Stakes

The 2026 edition which is the 20th of its kind, will feature an expanded format, from 12 to 16 teams, indicating a growth in the women’s basketball worldwide.

This is the largest field in the tournament’s history, bringing together the best women’s basketball nations from across continents.

Nigeria’s D’Tigress enter as one of four continental champions, aiming to reflect their dominance in Africa and their growing reputation on the global stage.

“We Must Start Better” – Wakama Speaks

Head coach Rena Wakama has already identified key areas for improvement after D’Tigress’ mixed outing at the qualification tournament in Lyon, where they recorded two wins and three losses.

“We were competitive throughout the tournament and learnt together, especially in the matches we lost,” she said.

“Going into the World Cup, we have to start games better and make sharper decisions on the court in critical moments.”

“We will go back, analyse the games and focus more on our energy.”

She reiterated that sharper execution and improved focus will be critical:

“We have to start games better, make better decisions in critical moments, and continue to improve.”

“We had a lot of breakdowns in this tournament, especially in areas we have already worked on.”

“We just need to be more focused at the start of games and bring the right energy.”

 Standout Performers & Emotional Farewell

At the Lyon qualifiers, Elizabeth Balogun led the scoring charts for Nigeria, while Musa Mujarnatu delivered strong all-round performances.

It was also a poignant moment as veteran Sarah Ogoke bowed out of international basketball, marking the end of an era for D’Tigress.

Meanwhile, Victoria McCaulay emerged as one of the tournament’s standout players, earning a place in the All-Star top five alongside top global talents.

 High-Level Preparation: WNBA Test Awaits

As part of preparations, D’Tigress will embark on a high-profile training tour in the United States, where they will face top WNBA sides:

  • Los Angeles Sparks
  • Minnesota Lynx
  • Indiana Fever

These fixtures are expected to sharpen their tactical execution, improve conditioning, and expose the squad to elite-level competition ahead of the World Cup.

 Backroom Boost: Boateng Appointment

In a strategic move to strengthen the technical crew, the Nigeria Basketball Federation appointed Stanley Boateng as assistant coach.

Boateng, known for his expertise in player development and tactical analysis, expressed his pride:

“Wearing Nigeria across my chest is bigger than anything I have ever experienced in my career.

“This is not just a job, it’s an honour. I am ready to give everything for these athletes and this nation.”

Wakama welcomed the addition, describing him as:

“a dedicated coach with a sharp basketball mind.”
