Few coaches in college football history, or really sports for that matter, can rival Steve Spurrier’s gift of gab. Whether it’s declaring Florida State University — “Free Shoes University,” saying star quarterback Peyton Manning only returned to college to play in the lowly Citrus Bowl, or a variety of digs, Spurrier has made a ton of enemies, dissing whoever he feels when he gets an opponent in his crosshairs.

However, when it came to the University of Georgia, Spurrier had a unique disdain for the Dawgs that dated back to the 1960s.

As a Heisman-winning quarterback at the University of Florida, Spurrier saw the Gators’ SEC title hopes fall at the hands of the Dawgs. It’s a memory he clung to years later in his coaching career as he sought revenge against Georgia in the best way he could. There was no love lost between the two as the Georgia fanbase despised Spurrier, sparking a nearly half-century-long beef.

You know what that means – it’s time for another history lesson in beef.
